This magnolia tree
in our front yard
feels magic to me.

It isn’t hard
to imagine
her blossoms
as cups of tea
poured
over June
for bird and bee.

Come fall
come wind
teacups fly free.
Pale petals
whisper –
Farewell, Tree.

And so it is.
So it will be
for everyone
I love.

And me.

The Water Tower

The Water Tower in our town
is cotton candy blue.
It looks down on my neighborhood.
It watches what we do.

It feeds each field of yellow corn
and helps us find our way.
It guards the ancient graveyard
where my Grandma goes to pray.

My house is small and orange.
The Tower – blue and tall.
It guides me as I walk to school
and cheers when I play ball.

The Tower wears graffiti
from kids of long ago.
I blur my eyes through pinkish light
to make the letters glow.

It knew my dad when he was young.
And it will know me when I’m old.
The Tower stands through heavy heat.
The Tower stands through minty cold.

The Water Tower knows our names.
It hears us when we sing or cry.
Like Santa or Orion
it lives and laughs up in the sky.

I hike these white fields
uncertain what I’ll find
under boulders in my heart
in the treehouse of my mind.

gathering old memories
so I can live again.

Umbrella Path

Like old stones in a river
…..one by one
……….these bright umbrellas
……………form a path across the water
………………..keeping people warm and dry.

But today I long to tiptoe
on the tops of each umbrella
green and orange
red and yellow
in soft silver tears of sky.

I want to dance across them
from umbrella to umbrella
tippy-tapping
pitter patter
as the people wonder why –

why they hear a sound
like footsteps
on their colorful umbrellas
as I whisper to this wet world
It is I.
It is I.
