Peace Pond

I watched from the gate
while a calligraphy of fish
stroked through the pond
as if trying not to disturb
the water

I loved the lily pads and carp
that you added over the years
they shone at night
by the light of the colored paper lanterns

but your iridescent skin
and what I imagined to be
your iridescent soul
really made my heart leap
then suddenly sink

it was your world
and yours alone
I felt like an American Samurai
not wanting to intrude
on your festival of peace

Author’s Note: Samurai is the term for the military nobility of pre-industrial Japan. According to translator William Scott Wilson: “In Chinese, the character 侍 was originally a verb meaning to wait upon or accompany a person in the upper ranks of society, and this is also true of the original term in Japanese, saburau.
