You Have To Be
By
Matthew Andrews
Response

You build yourself a home, a life, a dream

In comfort made from sweat and work and blood

Yet something there is more than it may seem

Some inner world of feeling’s deepest flood

You smile then, and go in for a swim

You settle into grass and close your eyes

Out of the darkness we all have within

Your former forms, fish flesh and fowl, arise

Your oldest souls have come to play with you

The one becomes the many becomes the one

Transmissions from our past are futured through

Once more you recollect how to be young

From distant forms drawn from the unseen sea

You have to be each thing that you can be
