They Don’t All Deserve Proper Burials
By Lisa Nielsen
Inspiration piece
they don’t all deserve proper burials: you burn their careful gestures on a barbecue like something from the butcher you didn’t really want to eat, while thankful hymns are carefully intoned during their cremation, for others a deep sigh of relief is all the grieving you need and then there’s the one that haunts your day: his favorite song simmering out of a slightly cracked car window, or that place you pass on your way to work, the one he liked to bring you to so you could drink sugary coffee and listen as he split himself open, releasing words like captured doves without ever looking into your eyes because that’s what the view was there for in the first place.
