Over the Los Padres Mountains in California,

He saw the Holy Spirit in the sky,

In red, raw tongues of flame

That leapt horizon and hills,

That joined the mountain top to heaven

By way of black, concealing cloud.

Here she broods between California hills

And big California sunset sky,

In the dry Autumn of the year;

The fearsome comforter

Of all the Holy Three,

Least known, most present,

Makes her consuming passion known

Here and now.

And outstretched wings of smoke and flame,

Confirm the old inspired words,

That yes, it is a fearful thing

To fall into the hand of God.
