with no hope for respite
floundering and splashing to stay afloat
certain to be sucked under
by whirlpools of worry.

The struggle continues
the last gasp is gulped
only now do we realize
we should have relaxed.

The current would have carried us

The Young One stared into her mirror

to search for someone other than herself.

 

The Aged One, she imagined, would

be a woman who got past her mistakes,

 

did not know regret and harbored no insecurities.

She would be a mature and wise beauty.

 

The Young One gazed into the glass

to find the one she assumed would have it all figured out.

 

After years of watching, the Aged One finally appeared,

but not in the form the Young One expected.

 

She was shockingly wrinkled and bent,

and weary from the burden of her years.

 

Fixing her piercing stare upon the other

she croaked only two words – “Forgive yourself.”

My world stopped
revolving around me
the other day.
It happened in the oddest way.

My perceptions
drained out of my ears
and pooled beneath my feet.

My expectations
seeped out of my pores
and evaporated into nothingness.

My stresses are no longer
strapped to my back.
I walk a few inches
higher than the ground.

It may take some time to
acclimate to life
without melodrama,
but that’s OK.

I no longer harbor fear.

I purchased a pair of earrings
thinking they were fireworks
but the receipt said they were angels.

Oh yes
the head, the torso, the wings.

Indeed they were angels
constructed of conjoined
circles and teardrops.

I wore them yesterday to the service.

There I sat under the sparkling blue sky
next to the newly planted
white blossomed pear tree.

There I sat amongst the broken hearted
mourning for two lost boys
so gifted and sweet.

There I sat and beseeched
my mind and my faith
for answers.

There were no answers.

My earrings understood
more than I did.
