Wise Earrings

I purchased a pair of earrings
thinking they were fireworks
but the receipt said they were angels.

Oh yes
the head, the torso, the wings.

Indeed they were angels
constructed of conjoined
circles and teardrops.

I wore them yesterday to the service.

There I sat under the sparkling blue sky
next to the newly planted
white blossomed pear tree.

There I sat amongst the broken hearted
mourning for two lost boys
so gifted and sweet.

There I sat and beseeched
my mind and my faith
for answers.

There were no answers.

My earrings understood
more than I did.

I love the way the poem picks up on the color of the photo. And I love the transition from fireworks to angels in mourning imagery. Such an inspired pairing!
