The Art of Loneliness
By Lisa Nielsen
Response
The art of loneliness festoons out
in rows of hope’s castaways
Not a single impediment left unshielded.
We beautify, we mend, then
tend to forget
we are not these things —
But we slather anyway.
He rummaged and with claw-fisted victory
Thought he found you
She was tepid at best
But loved masquerade
He is yours and not yours
He is mine in slotted time
I sniff from your top shelf
And dab at your fancy creams
Your scent and my sweat on your sheets
This is exactly what it seems
