White Clay
like a war mask over some blend
of Choctaw red Yoruba black
her hair’s plastered flat in leaf plates
and cords down brow hanging in eyes
weary wary glancing sidelong
either side of her eagle nose
full lips carven curve down in scorn
between the deep cheek grooves of grief
but her chin below them’s a prow
breaking through decaying race ice
