Coffee with Sugar
By Tori Lane
Inspiration piece
The morning drags its feet in beginning
so I curl into the couch, tuck a blanket around my knees,
hold my mug close up under my chin –
thick, dark comfort –
ritual morning coffee with sugar.
The rich smell dances around the room,
hugging picture frames and books
and the black swirls down,
down my throat, warming the day, clearing sleepy vision,
chasing away nighttimes monsters.
It’s thick and low –
mom humming a lullaby, rocking me to sleep,
great grandma’s quilt wrapped
around four-year-old shoulders.
