Franny the Flamingo
By Elizabeth Crawford
Response

Franny the Flamingo was quite the explorer. She loved boats and the ocean. Franny lived in Cancun, a place where every flamingo was happy. The sapphire blue sea glistened and gleamed which gave Franny immense pleasure. Franny peered through a dense fog cloud and spotted a little brown boat like a sitting duck in the water. Pondering the thought of having hands so she could drive the boat Franny skipped down the white sand beach. She watched the vessel rock in the steady currents of the waves. Franny already loved the boat. She could see that it was called the Cancun. “Probably after my home!” Franny thought happily. Then Franny kept walking and she walked into the sunset, importantly scanning over her imagination.

“Order Up!!”

Janice yells, her groovy-shoed feet never resting as she whizzes back and forth along the chrome bar. She never thought her Cat Cafe would do so well!

Customers line up from all over the city for her burgers and shakes.

She brushes a few sesame seeds off her stylish black and white dress, before moving back onto the floor. A shake here, a burger there, “Two Fries, Please!!…”

It never ends, the flurry of her restaurant. Oh, how she loves it.

At the end of a long day, after the Friday Dance Floor Special, she smiles, and says to herself, “Janice. You are one lucky cat!”

Glimpse
By Georgia Ludwig VanDerwater
Inspiration piece

.
I caught a glimpse of a gnome in the pansies

Just a glimpse but I saw it quite clear.

He appeared to be weeding the garden

and had a pencil behind his small ear.
.

His cheeks were quite red.

His belly was round.

He talked on his cell phone

and sat on the ground.
.

“I swear I saw it. A human, I think.

It was in the garden. I gave it a wink.

Then I ran off for fright of the cat

(Believe me, I’ve had some problems with that.)”

.
My mother will tell me, “What nonsense, pure folly.

That’s like saying you’ve been on Pluto, by golly.”

I ponder this, a tulip in my hand

Are humans so rare in the gnomes’ hidden land?
