Catching Fire
By Linda M. Rhinehart Neas
Response

Passion at seventeen is all encompassing –

weak-kneed, breathless   –

who can really grasp its meaning
behind that sudden rush of fire
when words drop like cinders
and a look can torch the soul?

Passion at fifty-seven takes more –

no wink and a promise –

but the yearnings of years past,
the tender touch of a calloused hand,
the slow dance of a fire
that has burned forever –

Passion’s meaning – caught in a whisper
and held lightly in the burning embers
of love that has been tested like steel –
tempered and strong.
