2012: Mankind’s Paradise Lost
By Karen Jakubowsi
Inspiration piece

Fishers of paradise cast lines outward
seek happiness in external pursuits.
Thriving on thieving and sinking hooks into livers,
the lost snag whatever and wherever.
Effigies controlled by obsession
become stuck collectors of things.
Still as statues shrouded by greed.
They worship materialism,
believe objects are sacred.
The hollow tree is deceptive
strong in appearance but
undernourished and desolate within.
Humanity is off-kilter. Sanity is dwindling.
We strike wars like matches.
Many are mentally bankrupt.
Spiritually adrift they recite the obscenity prayer.
Hammer of hell reigns, bludgeoning messages.
Can you hear the coo of the pigeon?
We seek freedom from strife.
Pass a man existing on a sidewalk
stench of layered filth coils vinelike
assaults senses. Do you turn away?
All are connected. Invisible strings link us.
Are you afraid of your own sorrow?
There is a voice that doesn’t use words – listen.
