It Was Not a Dragon
By
Angi Lewis
Response

It was not a dragon
whose spine I climbed along
though it was jagged
like a dragon’s back
and had a winding tail
that trailed every which way
and a long tongue that flowed down its face
into a thin spit of river.

It was not a dragon
whose spine I climbed along
high up into the clouds
though the clouds were like exhalations
the breath of some creature
a fire burning within.

It was not a dragon
whose spine I climbed along

but then

there was a creaking

like hinges long frozen

the snow-covered flanks lifted
white wings that flapped slowly at first
then faster, with great force.

In a rush of wind we were rising
flying
far above the clouds
the earth just a speck

where it was a dragon I rode
when I reached out and caught
the sun.
