Layered colors
disobey the rudimentary
outlines as if they will
not be contained.

Life is like a painting that way—
the straight bold line
warns of the impending edge,
the permanent pigments lost

at the margins.
How the white fog of mid-life
never truly obscures
the past—

there are consequences
of choice: undertones, tinges, shadows and
stains, a bit of bright,
specks of memory—

reminders revealed
in the tinted strata.
