Study in Blue
By Caroline Davies
Response
With her lavender lips
signalling disease
she gives herself to music
Chopin is her favourite.
She imagines them meeting.
with their shared Polish ancestry,
hers diluted by the New World.
Her heart seems to beat faster,
faster still, only music
can steady it.
Men call her beautiful.
She sits for her portrait.
The wide brimmed hat
hides her thinning hair.
He paints blue circles
on the walls
to hide the mould.
Brings her presents
of skeleton leaves
fragile, pressed flat.
She arranges them in patterns.
but he is too young
death means nothing to him.
