OPENING INTO COLOR
By Marcella Wolfe
Response

We would take these colors
for what they are
if we could only know them:
the color of a child’s face
before its parents are born,
the hue of an embryo
making itself known,
the shades of birthmarks
on our soft heads as infants
as we fall from our mothers
like tiny leaves
from a tree in a storm.

And what of the blue of lost hours?
And that orange-red
that slits the sky at sunset
opening us to colors
we have yet to know.
