City Dahlias

Response

I walk along the sidewalk
staring sideways at a railing
spotting dahlias by the dozen
darting out through every crack.

People bustle passing
as my eyes trace fragile petals.
I’m remembering my grandma.
Every blossom takes me back.

For the gate holds the garden
and the garden holds the dahlia
and the dahlia holds the memories
of the dahlias Grandma grew.

She scattered quilts of flowers
that we gathered by the armful
telling stories to each other.
There’s a dahlia.
Déjà vu.
