The Gift
Cypress bow their crowns
to the Pacific as fog ensconced hills
make a wholly inept attempt to reach the sky. Still the view is magnificent
in its failure. Here
on the 1, just north of Big Sur’s
visual Mecca it is understood
why California is for dreamers.
If the sky was any bluer,
I could drown in it;
if the horizon stretched farther–
I’d find eternity.
How–from far enough away–
it is clear the coast was meant as a gift
for the ocean to enjoy–
an offering for endings–
and how we, at this vista,
are grateful for the sacrifice.
