Two in the morning you and I would email “Go to bed!”
Tonight three o’clock finds me aimless, waiting for your reminder.

We were to grow old together
Each other’s ace in the hole.
If our spouses should leave or die
The two of us would remain, each for the other –
Live together in the cottage on the Cape,
Raise foster children,
Bake whole grain bread.

I stand here alone
Giving your eulogy.
