The Small Things
By Claire Walker
Inspiration piece
Think of those seeds we pushed in the ground,
the way the beans sprouted from practically nothing
but the wet dark of earth. We’d no guarantee
of the things they needed, however simple
sunlight and water might seem.
They clung to that bamboo pole and climbed
ever skyward. Those hot, bright
flowers of orange on green drifted hope
through the kitchen window.
They made the heat of the pan their own,
forgave the burn on their outdoor skin,
ran with the water to prove their flavour.
Remember how good they tasted?
