Summer Recipe

Response
Blend until smooth:
one tray of ice cubes
a frozen container of limeade
three-fourths container
(reminder: that’s the limeade container)
of rum.
Taste test for desired effect.
(After all, it’s vacation.)
Freeze.
Cube:
cantaloupe
Chill.
Mix:
second tray of ice cubes
two sliced lemons
a package of frozen strawberries
in large pitcher.
Refrigerate.
Peel and slice:
cucumber
Stack in double layer
on favorite mild bread.
(Let the cuke lead.)
Melt:
one stick of butter—
salted or unsalted will work.
Find the baster brush.
Set both aside.
Grab:
a book
sunglasses
the unfinished crossword
two cups—or just straws!
three towels—
one for a pillow, one for the knees
(they’re not so nimble anymore)
and a large one for sprawling
the favorite lounger
maybe an umbrella
(not optional for the dog)
Gather: all
Add:
the back deck or
the garage roof or
the ocean (preferably);
summer attire (optional)
sun (not optional)
sky (any shade of blue)
Baste:
skin with butter (liberally)
Bake.
Serves:
one, maybe two.
Easily multiplied.
Repeat:
Until responsibility calls.
(or you need more drinks)
As needed.
Often.
(but never often enough)
