In Honor of my Sister, Debbie, Whose Light Shines On…
Marcia Russell

Inspiration piece

I felt like a 100-watt light bulb dimming to 20 watts. ‘Chemo-‐brain’ made me too fragmented to concentrate on reading. But I tried to enjoy my 20 watts. The nightlight in my bedroom illuminated a third of the ceiling, and I thought, “That’s where I’ll focus my attention, not to the dark corner.”

I lifted my window one-third open, and I meditated on passing through that small opening.
