On the Bay

What was she thinking
inviting me along on
the Sunfish that day?
She, all of fifteen,
was a practiced sailor.
I had never sailed.
Not knowing the jargon,
“coming about!” nearly lost
me my head–but I learned.
I could barely swim, yet
we capsized giggling
instead of glubbing.
Youthful exuberance
and a dollop of trust
were all life required.
I didn’t realize then that
being underwater wouldn’t
always be survivable.
And having the means
to sail on the bay
requires more than trust.
